Coast Standards License

Version 1.0, 2026-09-07. Copyright (c) 2026 Abbey Jackson.

In plain words

This is not an open-source license. You may use Coast Standards, including in a business, to build and ship your own software, and you may share it with others unchanged. You may not sell it, change it and pass the changed version off as the standards, or build a product or service whose main value comes from it. Keep the copyright notice on every copy. Contributions are welcome and become part of the standards under this license. The legal terms below are what count.

1. Definitions

"The Software" means this repository's contents: the rules, the checks, the hooks, the installer, the documentation, and every release of them.

"The Owner" means the copyright holder named above.

"Your Project" means a software project of your own into which the Software's installer has placed copies of the checks, hooks, rules and configuration.

"Derived Product" means any product, service, tool, model, agent, assistant, or hosted offering whose primary function, or a substantial part of its value, comes from the Software or from material derived from it, including a wrapper, a re-packaging, a checking or review service, or a coding assistant built on the rules or the checks.

2. What you may do

Subject to the conditions in section 4, the Owner grants you a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to:

a. use the Software, including for commercial purposes, to build, test, review and ship Your Project; b. copy and distribute the Software unchanged, in whole or in part; c. modify the copies the installer places in Your Project (for example the rules document, the linter configuration, the path table and the exception files) for the sole purpose of applying the Software to Your Project; and d. run the Software, and let people and automated agents working on Your Project run it.

3. What you may not do

You may not, and may not permit anyone else to:

a. sell, rent, lease, sublicense, or charge for the Software or any part of it; b. distribute, publish, or share a modified version of the Software, or present a modified version as the standards, other than the modifications permitted in section 2(c) inside Your Project; c. offer the Software, or any part of it, as a hosted service, or as part of a Derived Product, including one that competes with any product of the Owner; d. remove or alter the copyright notice, this license, or the attribution to the Owner in any copy; or e. use the Owner's name or product names to endorse or promote a product without written permission.

4. Conditions

a. Every copy or substantial portion of the Software you distribute must include this license and the copyright notice. b. Your Project may state that it follows Coast Standards. It must not state or imply that the Owner endorses it. c. If you breach section 3, this license ends automatically. It is reinstated if you cure the breach within 30 days of learning of it, unless the Owner has already terminated it in writing.

5. Contributions

If you submit a change to the Owner for inclusion in the Software (a pull request, a patch, an issue with code, or the like), you grant the Owner a perpetual, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to use, modify, distribute and sublicense that contribution as part of the Software under this license or any later version of it, and you confirm you have the right to grant that license. You keep the copyright in your contribution.

6. No warranty

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE OWNER BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.

7. General

This license is governed by the laws of British Columbia, Canada. If any part of it is found unenforceable, the rest stands. The Owner may publish new versions of this license; a release of the Software carries the version that applies to it.
